You may be aware of these thoughts, but often they are just outside our conscious awareness. If your mind perceives a threat then it triggers the release of the various stress hormones into the body which produces the symptoms you experience.

We react in much the same way, whether we are experiencing a real situation or just thinking about it. Simply thinking negatively about a future situation such as a presentation, performance or event is enough to to trigger the fight or flight response.

Anxiety functions in such a way that makes it almost impossible to fight head on. Most people desperately fight it by trying in vain to control and manage the symptoms. In fact the more you try to control the anxiety symptoms, the worse they often get! The Chinese proverb “The tree that does not bend with the wind will be broken by the wind”, quite neatly illustrates the problem with this approach. One obvious solution is not to rigidly control the symptoms, but to focus on flowing with them and change what’s actually causing them.

As anxiety starts with your negative thoughts about a situation, the most logical place to start making changes is with those problematic thoughts. Change those thoughts so that you stop perceiving the situation as a threat and the anxiety goes away. This is actually a much easier and quicker process that you might think, and any experienced psychotherapist should be able to help.

Speaking publicly is very challenging. There is a widespread myth that the average person’s number one fear, greater than death itself, is speaking publicly. This is complete and total fabricated malarkey. It is actually pretty humorous that this platitude ever gets repeated at all when, if scrutinized even in the most modest of manners it falls apart. Though, be forewarned, part of the trouble with speaking publicly is that people do not feel that they have as much of an obligation to pay attention as when in a smaller group. If the problem persists people will lose interest, and you will have to suffer through plentiful floor staring.

The last tip is the most important. It’s the one people neglect and suffer the dire consequences of. Make sure to rehearse your presentation in advance to the point of near nauseousness. Every ounce of real suffering you pour onto yourself prior to your speech in the form of repeatedly rehearsing your presentation will pay off in spades.
