The pitfalls of house-purchase, a nostalgic look at a home town, a lifetime of haircuts and hair-loss and a series of people who share their names with celebrities were the subjects of the four main speeches at Wednesday’s meeting of Tyneside Speakers’ Club.

In Bernie Dixon’s Our Dream Home, he gave a moving first-hand account of the things that can go wrong when buying property. Sellers objecting to thorough surveys, building societies declining mortgages and insurance companies refusing claims of subsidence etc. were just some of the drawbacks experienced on the road to his eventual satisfaction.

John Brown’s speech on Home painted a colourful, historic and nostalgic picture of Great Yarmouth of which he is a native son.

Geoff Wadsworth’s account of his unfortunate experiences with alopecia was brightened by amusing anecdotes about his memories of men’s hairdressers.

Ken Creen chose to enlighten his audience with an account of people he had encountered with the same names as various celebrities.

In his general evaluation Gerry Daniel commented on the variety and success of the evening and congratulated the Topics Chairman, John F. Brown for persuading the rest of the members to tell stories about themselves that may or may not be true.

There are only 2 more opportunities to enjoy listening or taking part in these meetings before the Summer Break. A first-hand account of a near miss on a snowbound runway during the recent extreme weather was the opening for John Brown’s speech on Happy Landings at Wednesday’s meeting of Tyneside Speakers’ Club. The almost disastrous events recounted in vivid and alarming detail, introduced a whole range of factors which can lead to a fear of flying. Terrorism and the development of new technology to combat it formed the major part of John’s talk. He explained the scientific basis of some of the up to date applications of biometric and physiological means of identifying would–be terrorists. This did at least offer some encouragement. John then had to go through the rigours of having his speech evaluated no less than four times by four different members. It was these four who were really on trial, in that they were competing in the annual Evaluation Contest. In summing up the Chief Judge, Chris Slinger referred to the high standard set by all four contestants, and announced the Club President, Anne Morrison to be runner-up and Clive Parkin as the winner to go forward to the District Competition in York on Feb 19th. The next Club meeting is on Wednesday 16th February 7.15 for 7.30 at the Kittiwake. Claremont Crescent, Whitley Lodge. As always visitors are welcome and will not be evaluated once let alone four times.
